Kitchen Remodel in Vacaville, Ca.
Some details about this kitchen remodel
We completed this kitchen in Feb 2012.
The cabinets are American Woodmark, Savannah door style, Maple wood with Auburn Glaze finish. These use all dovetail constructed drawer boxes, cushion close doors and drawers, and a couple other goodies like spice rack drawer, utensil organizer drawer, and cookie sheet organizer next to the oven.
Countertops are a nice deep granite with combination tile backsplash, using glass mosaic at the sink and range area, and tumbled marble tile through the other areas. There is a undermount stainless steel sink with pullout sprayer Moen faucet.
There was originally an alcove area in the kitchen that held a bench style table. This area seemed more suited for a new pantry and refrigerator location since the actual dining room was already just on the other side of that wall and we could gain open floor square footage in the kitchen area as a result. So we relocated the refrigerator and ice maker lines inside a flush wall mount outlet and filled the alcove with cabinetry as well. We installed a new pantry cabinet (50% larger than the original) in it’s new location, with rollout shelves and full depth cabinet above the refrigerator. Made a big improvement on food storage area with ease of access, and gained nearly 6 feet in countertop space in the rest of the kitchen.
We opened up the wall between the kitchen and dining room instead of the doorway passage that originally kept both areas quite isolated from each other. Family gatherings should prove much more social with the kitchen and dining area now combined.
The flooring is natural travertine that carries from the front foyer, down through the kitchen and into the dining area. Since it’s a natural stone product, it was sealed both prior to grouting and again while sealing the grout.
The old florescent tube lighting and panel diffusers were replaced with recessed canned lighting after necessary framing/sheetrock changes were made. Still using CFL bulbs for energy efficiency with an equivalent 125w rating gives them the “nice and bright” kitchen they requested. We also installed xenon under cabinet lights that add great task lighting as well as really show off the depth of color in the granite and bring out the natural colors of the marble backsplash.
If you noticed the single cabinet tucked into the corner of the dining area, it is a waste/recycle bin organizer. It has a drawer on top and hides two 13-gallon plastic bins inside a slide out door front. While we didn’t incorporate the bin cabinet into the mounted cabinet layout, it was put to great use as a mobile work station mounted on casters and also topped with granite.
